Common Types of Paint
Updated: Feb 5, 2021
There are many different types of paint. When starting a new wall painting project, knowing where to begin and what paints to use can be overwhelming.
Primer Paint
Primer is not a type of paint, but it is a necessary layer for most painting projects. Primer is the first coat you apply before anything else. It helps paint adhere to the surface, and ensures your color is what you expect once dried. Primer comes in two base forms: water-base and oil-based. Use the same base for the primer as the paint you have chosen. For those of my readers who wear makeup, this is the same concept as putting primer on your face before applying your makeup.
Oil-Based and Water-Based Paint
Oil-based paints are made with oil, and water-based paints are made with water. Typically, water-based paints are thinner, matte, and take less time to dry, while oil-based paints are more durable, shiny, and take longer to dry. Same concept with makeup types.
Acrylic Paint
Acrylic paint is another name for water-based paint, that uses acrylic as the binding agent. Acrylic paint comes in several varieties:
-Acrylic latex
-Acrylic enamel
-Acrylic latex enamel
Interior and Exterior Paint
Most paint cans are marked interior or exterior. This is a guide with respect to where the paint is best utilized. Inside paints are generally water-based, and outside paints are normally oil-based.

Latex Paint
Latex paint refers to water-based paint, although there is actually no latex in the paint at all.

Enamel Paint
Oil-based paints are sometimes called ‘enamel’ because of their durability as is the enamel on your teeth. Enamel paints can be found in a variety of finishes, such as gloss and semi-gloss. These are often used on trims around windows and doors. One thing to keep in mind with enamel paint is that is tends to discolor over time.

Specialty Paints
The above types of paints may have additives to enhance certain features.
Some include:
-Anti-mold or anti-mildew
-Fire retardants
-Anti-condensation
